Artist Statement*

self portrait, digital, 2019

I am an Afro-Latino Costa Rican-American artist and creative producer working primarily in visual and interactive media to create experiential narratives that explore–

// explore the assemblage of self-awareness, subjectivity, and spirituality.
// explore ideas of identity, the dynamic nature of perception, and the nature of reality.
// explore the ever-shifting boundaries between the real and the imaginary.

My work sits across a spectrum of experiential mediums, from the traditional static and moving images of illustration and film to the immersive, interactive choreography of virtual reality and physical installations. Like many artists before me, I seek to understand the dynamics of humans and systems. I am particularly interested in exploring the many dimensions of identity, the relationships between parallel worlds, and the role of communal mythologies in shaping personal narratives. Similarly, I am drawn to and inspired by narratives that challenge the assumed distinctions between what is “real” and what is “imaginary” and how these layers overlap to create our perceptions of reality.

Philosophy, mythology, and technology are the intersecting dimensions of my artistic reality– how we think about how we think, the stories we tell about ourselves and the universe we inhabit, and how we engage with and transform our world with technological advancements and innovations. At the heart of all my work is an optimistic curiosity, driven by the belief that somewhere in the assemblage of the infinite permutations of the human experience is the universal truth we all seek. In searching with an open mind and empathetic heart, we may finally see ourselves, each other, and the cosmos with eyes unclouded.
